Missionaries in Japan Are Safe Following 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake
Friday, March 11, 2011
Church of God Ministries has received reports from Don Armstrong, the Global Missions regional coordinator for the Asia–Pacific region, that all our ten missionaries and family members serving in Japan are safe and unharmed by the massive earthquake and devastating tsunami that rocked that country on March 11, 2011.
The ministries of the Church of God in Japan are located in Tokyo and other areas farther south of the capital city. The epicenter for the earthquake was approximately 230 miles northeast of Tokyo near the city of Sendai, a city with a population of one million. International media outlets are reporting initial death tolls from Sendai to be in hundreds, with speculation that the numbers will rise significantly.
The tsunami caused by the earthquake is expected to impact countries around the Pacific Rim, reaching as far as North and South America, Guam, Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand, in addition to the numerous other island nations in the Pacific.
Please pray for all of those who have or will be affected by this terrible event. The Disaster Relief Committee at Church of God Ministries will continue to monitor and assess the needs that may arise from this situation.
